What are the rules of baggage transportation on the train?

The property on the railway message is allowed to be transported in the form of hand luggage or in a separate baggage car.

Hand luggage

When traveling by train, you do not need to register your hand luggage, as for example on an airplane, as well as pay for it if it fits into the following parameters:

• weight up to 36 kg (for all types of seats, except for a double suite, it can accommodate up to 50 kg);
• the sum of the length + width + height of your hand luggage must be less than 180 cm.

Following the rules, in order to take another hand luggage, you need to buy an additional ticket.

In reality, controllers pay little attention to such restrictions, the conductor will not stand with a ruler and scales to measure your bag before boarding. And when you have several heavy-looking bags, then it's better to buy a place for luggage in advance.

Each type of carriage has a special place for your hand luggage:

• compartment and SV cars in the lower niche and near the ceiling;
• reserved seats in the lower niche and near the ceiling;
• sitting cars — on racks above the seats, or other special places provided by the design of the car.

You do not need to occupy all the luggage compartments with your belongings, you are not traveling alone and the rest of the passengers can also be with hand luggage. Passengers with a ticket to the seat from below, gets the priority right to the niche under the sleeping place, and vice versa, who rides on the top shelf has the priority right to the upper niche.

It is allowed to carry any liquids on the train, including alcohol, based on the norm of 0.5 liters per 1 person.

Additional hand luggage

You can also take another 50 kg of hand luggage with you, but this is paid separately. For children under 5 years old, the right to separate hand luggage does not apply if he has a free seat.

It is also allowed to transport household, video and audio equipment by train, even if there is hand luggage, but no more than one item per ticket. The size should not be more than the sum of three dimensions 180 cm.

If the weight of household appliances fits into 36 kg, there is no need to register it, otherwise it is necessary to turn to the conductor.

What to do if your luggage is lost

If you have lost your hand luggage or luggage, then you should inform the head of the train or station (station) as soon as possible. Be prepared that you will need to present your passport, travel ticket and baggage receipt.

Cargo compartment

The total weight of luggage for 1 passenger is 200 kg. The size of the luggage in the sum of three dimensions (width, length and height) should not exceed 180 cm.

You can pay for a seat in the baggage car at the ticket office at the station.

Each object that is put in the luggage compartment must be packed. Please note that you are responsible for the safety of your belongings.

Rules for the carriage of special baggage

Overall sports equipment, it is also allowed to carry baby strollers, wheelchairs, etc., under the guise of hand luggage, without paying separately. This is all only on condition that they are disassembled and packed. 

If the dimensions of your luggage exceed 180 cm (according to the sum of the sides), in this case it can be issued as luggage on hand. You can do this at the ticket office of the station.

You can carry hunting and sporting weapons in hand luggage. For safety, the weapon must be in a special package, fully discharged and separate from the cartridges.

A fee is charged for each piece of special baggage, according to the baggage rates in kilograms:

• bicycle (unpacked) — 10 kg;
• kayak (and other similar watercraft) — 30 kg;
• weapons (under special conditions) — 10 kg.

For example, if the weight of the bike is 13kg, you will pay 2 fares.

Large luggage on the train

If the item exceeds the sum of width, length and height of 180 cm, then its transportation is possible in a special freight car. 

Conditions of use of a freight car:

• one piece of large luggage per passenger;
• weight not more than 75 kg;
• height up to 175 cm;
• width up to 50 cm;
• depth up to 45.

If the baggage does not match, then you may be refused transportation, even if everything was paid in advance. The funds for the service will not be returned to you by themselves, you need to file a claim for a refund.

Car carriage

Today there is a possibility of phys. persons can transport their cars in a specialized wagon. Usually such a car can transfer 3-4 cars (or motorcycles). The cost of the service depends on the route, the load of the car and other factors.

To use this option, first of all, contact JSC "Russian Railways" and specify the availability of this service for your direction. Next, submit an application by phone, through the website of JSC "Russian Railways" or at a special ticket office for the carriage of a car.

Transportation of animals by train

Transportation of animals by railway message takes place under special conditions, and may vary greatly from one flight to another. For more precise information, contact the ticket office at the train station or directly to the carrier for your destination.
