Innsbruck Train station

Station history

The railway plan began to be created in 1850. Franz Zwervenk designed the station building, which was one of the most beautiful in the Austrian Empire. The station began operating in 1867. And in 1880 it had to be expanded due to the increased traffic flow.

In 1924, the management of the station passed to the state railway company of Austria and it had to be rebuilt and expanded again. The walls of the waiting room were decorated with frescoes by the artist Rudolf Stolz. The transition between the platforms began to be carried out through underground passages, the roofs of the depot and platforms were restored. A clock tower was also built, which still towers over the buildings of the station.

During the Second World War, the buildings were almost completely destroyed. Therefore, after its completion, the architects had to create a new project and rebuild the station. It is based on the simple and functional style of those years.

The decoration of the main waiting room was entrusted to the artist Max Weiler. The frescoes were carefully removed along with the layer of the main masonry and moved. Some of them can still be seen on the walls of the station.

After 1997, the terminal was restored by Riegler Riewe architects. The new station was officially opened in May 2004. The construction cost 25 million euros.
