How to properly issue a children's train ticket?

It should be borne in mind that when selling tickets, the age of the child is taken into account not on the date of purchase, but on the day of departure of the train. Travel documents for children are issued according to the data of the birth certificate or passport. Otherwise, the process of purchasing children's tickets is no different from adults.

Children up to 5 years old, and in soft cars of domestic transport up to 10 years old, occupying the same seat with an adult can travel for free. On the website, a child's cashless ticket must be issued simultaneously with an adult, in a single order. If it is necessary to provide children with separate seats, tickets are purchased at a children's rate.

Children aged 5-10 years are purchased a children's ticket, the fare of which is set by the carrier and automatically calculated. Children under the age of 10 travel only under the supervision of adults, otherwise the conductor will not even allow them to board.

From the age of 10, children get a full ticket at an adult fare. Students of educational institutions from the beginning of September to the end of May are provided with preferential travel with a 50% discount, which does not apply to cars that assume increased comfort (compartment and suite). 

The main child fares are valid in the directions of railway communication with the Baltic States and the CIS, the Republic of Abkhazia.

On commuter trains for children:

• up to 5 years old, a cashless ticket or a child's ticket is issued;
• 5-7 years old children's ticket is purchased;
• 7 years and older — full ticket.

On the Sapsan trains, children under 10 years of age can purchase tickets at the children's fare in any cars. Passengers aged from 10 years to 21 years inclusive are offered a "Junior" fare with a 30% discount, which does not apply to Class 1B cars and compartment-meeting rooms.

The standard discount on children's tickets is usually 2/3 of the adult price. To Finland preschoolers (up to 6 years old) they can travel for free if they are located in the same place with an adult; from 6 to 17 years old — on children's tickets. A 100% discount is provided to preschoolers up to 4 years old when traveling to Mongolia and European countries; and children over 4 and under 12 years old get tickets at children's rates. 

Important! These benefits apply exclusively to Russian Railways trains, therefore, when buying tickets for international routes, you should specify the travel conditions for children in advance.
