Ladoga Railway Station is the newest and transit operating railway station in St. Petersburg. 50 suburban trains, 30 intercity and international trains depart from it, in total the station includes 10 tracks and 4 platforms.
Historical background
The station began to function in 2003, but it was first mentioned in 1903. In the same year, a railway station was built for freight transportation - Dolgorukov's Dacha.
The station was going to be built in the 60s of the 20th century, so there was a need for new stations. Alas, at that time this idea could not be realized due to the unstable economy and lack of finance.
A special project of an intellectual building has been prepared for Ladoga Railway Station. It is still one of the largest and most technological railway stations not only in Russia, but also in Europe. The uniqueness of the structure lies in the presence of levels. On the upper "floor" there are international and long-distance ticket offices, two waiting rooms, two communication salons, terminals and ATMs and several recreation areas. At the lower level, everything is the same, only the ticket offices sell tickets for suburban destinations, buses. Accordingly, the exit to the international platforms is located on top, and to the suburban ones below ground level.
Why is the railway station interesting from an architectural point of view
The station building does not stand out from the point of view of architecture, functionality and technical equipment are of particular interest. The main task assigned to the builders is to quickly and efficiently build a building, levels, that is, to place everything necessary on a limited area. Therefore, the exits for long-distance transport are located at the top, and the suburban ones are located below ground level.
Most of the upper space is occupied by a huge hall (Light) with functionality for passengers. You can move between floors using elevators, escalators and stairs. Visually, all these structures are interconnected by vertical glass blocks in the form of wells. Polished stone was used for exterior decoration. Characteristic features of Ladoga railway station: large pillars for support, oval windows, glass walkways and elevators, bridges, metal floors everywhere, large domes, a lot of transparency and glass everywhere. These features are characteristic of the Art Nouveau style of the 19th century. Due to the metal and glass, the station seems light and airy, like a fairy-tale palace.

Interesting moments from the biography of the railway station
The chief designer and architect of Ladoga Railway station, Yavein Nikita, had long harbored a dream to build a large and functional railway station and become famous just like his father. His graduation project was just a prototype of the Ladoga railway station, which was later brought to life. It was his first work that became the main one for the architecture of the building.
When starting the first electric locomotive, a small accident occurred. Due to an incorrect calculation in the design of the platform, he went off the route, damaged his side and demolished the fences. This incident was the first and last in the history of the station.
In 2001, Ladoga Railway Station received the Grand Prix at the international event dedicated to international architecture "Architecture 2001" as a particularly significant social object.
The station has a second official name - "Dolgorukov's Dacha". Such a name can be seen even in official papers.
This station is the only one in St. Petersburg that carries out transit directions. All existing stations in the city are dead-end.
